Dataset: occupancy of German charging stations

Nobody publishes how many charge points at a station are actually free: operators keep utilisation figures to themselves, and the charging point register only states what was built – not what is used. This site has been recording it for weeks. The full holding is available for download here.

Scope

1,630,493
measurements
26,187
charging stations
118,041
in the last 24 hours

Oldest measurement included: 9 Aug 2026. Measurements are kept for 120 days and then drop out – the dataset is a sliding window, not a growing archive.

The columns

Column Meaning
station_id Identifier of the charging station in the Federal Network Agency's register. It lets you join this dataset against the register.
timestamp_local Time of measurement in local time (Europe/Berlin).
ts_unix The same moment as Unix time.
weekday Weekday, 1 = Monday through 7 = Sunday (local time).
hour Hour of the day, 0 to 23 (local time).
available Free charge points at the time of measurement.
occupied Occupied charge points.
reserved Reserved charge points. Empty for measurements taken before this was separated from occupied – empty means "not recorded", not "none".
total Total charge points according to the source.
latitude Position of the charging station (latitude, longitude), so the dataset stands on its own without the register.
out_of_service Charge points the source explicitly reports as faulty. Empty for measurements before 2026-08-16 – empty means "not recorded", not "no fault". A value above zero across many consecutive measurements is a sustained outage.
unknown Charge points the source says nothing about. Read it alongside every other number in the row: if eight points are reported and six of them are unknown, "one point free" says little about the location.

What the dataset does not give you

Not a random sample. The monitored locations lie in the areas most searched on this site, selected by power and proximity. Generalising to Germany means generalising from those areas to all others.

There are gaps. Measurement runs every four hours; if a run fails, that window is simply missing. Four consecutive days are missing between 10 and 14 August 2026.

One source, not reality. The values come from the map service TomTom, which in turn receives them from the operators. Whatever is reported wrongly there is wrong here too.

Empty fields are statements. They mean "not recorded" and never "zero charge points". Turning them into zeros on import manufactures a utilisation that never happened.

Citing

The address of this page stays stable. Because the holding is a sliding window, the retrieval date belongs in the citation:

chargemyride (2026): Occupancy of German charging stations. Own measurement series. Retrieved on 15.09.2026. https://chargemyride.live/datensatz

The measurements are this site's own observations, collected through TomTom's interface. Redistribution is subject to their terms of use – anyone wanting to publish the dataset beyond their own analysis had better clarify that first.
