How full are charging stations really?

An analysis of this site's own occupancy series for 3 Sep 2026 to 15 Oct 2026: 5,190,198 measurements at 27,232 charging locations that report their occupancy to the National Access Point themselves. The figures on this page no longer change – they may be cited.

21 %
of charge points at fast chargers are occupied on average – around 31 % at midday
15 %
of the time a fast-charging location has no free point
29 %
of charge points at standard chargers are occupied on average
2.3 %
of charge-point time is reported as out of order by the operators themselves
99 %
of reported faults are over within a day (half within 1.3 h)
20
locations had been reported out of order for more than 7 days at the end of the period

Occupancy by time of day

Share of usable charge points that are occupied or reserved – averaged over all weekdays, local time.

Standard chargers are fuller at night than fast chargers: cars stay there overnight. Fast chargers fill up from 9 am and stay about equally full until the evening.

When fast chargers are most often full

  1. Friday, 13:00: no free point at 23 % of locations
  2. Monday, 13:00: no free point at 23 % of locations
  3. Sunday, 17:00: no free point at 23 % of locations
  4. Saturday, 13:00: no free point at 23 % of locations
  5. Saturday, 17:00: no free point at 23 % of locations

Faults

Only what the operator itself reports as "out of order" is counted. A fault phase starts with the first report of a faulty point and ends when none is reported faulty any more.

45,338 fault phases ended during the period. Half of them lasted less than 1.3 hours, nine in ten less than 6 hours.

At the end of the period 390 locations were reported out of order, 20 of them for more than 7 days.

For 46,263 further phases the operator's reporting stopped before the fault was over – their duration is unknown and not counted.

By operator

Operators with at least 150 locations in the series. Important when reading: a low fault value can also mean that an operator rarely reports faults. What is compared is what the operators state about themselves.

Method

Each measurement holds until the next one, but at most 4 hours and 15 minutes; after that the time counts as unknown. So a station that is occupied for three hours and free for ten minutes counts as mostly occupied – not half and half, as merely counting measurements would suggest. Time is split at hour boundaries. Occupied means occupied or reserved; faulty points count as neither free nor occupied. Fast chargers are locations with at least 50 kW maximum power according to the charging station register.

What the figures do not say

Only networks that provide their data at the National Access Point without registration are covered – among them many municipal utilities, Tesla, Qwello and SMATRICS. Large networks such as EnBW or Ionity are missing. The figures therefore describe these networks, not all of Germany. And they are only as accurate as the operators' reports.
